Phillips Stops Research on Autostereoscopic Displays

I was somewhat saddened to see this story the other day over at Engadget.  To the best of my knowledge, Phillips was the biggest company making a market push with autostereoscopic displays.  It seems like this technology is headed back to the research labs for now.

That was the depressing image on the WowVX blog.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

There are a lot of good stereoscopic viewing solutions available on the market. E.g. the new HDTV monitors from Hyundai. The little resolutions that are possible today on autostereoscopic displays may be to fare for gamers sitting right in front of a screen. On the other hand the content production and the technology behind makes this way a very expensive one.
So, if Phillips thinks about stopping their engagement in the autostereoscopic technology, does’nt mean that 3D is no longer an interesting market.
